A great-grandfather to 20 children – with another on the way has been awarded Connect Champion of the Month.
Blackburn’s Bill Wignall, at the sprightly age of 88, was nominated to be crowned champion for his commitment and enthusiasm as a regular participant in group walking activities.
Bill’s friendly face will be known by many as he spent years working as a vacuum repairer on Blackburn Market for Ainsworths.
Despite having 13 grandchildren, 20 great children and another on the way, Bill still finds the time to keep healthy and active.
He got involved in Connect’s walking activities after attending a workshop at a luncheon club. He now regularly takes part in the Connect’s Bimbling around the Park walks for those with low mobility or who can’t keep up with the faster paced walking groups.
He has also tried his hand at touring Witton Park’s beautiful countryside by travelling on one of the free motorised Trampers available for hire at the park as part of Connect’s cycling group.
Cheryl Sandford, Connect Communities Co-ordinator, nominated Bill for the award.
She said: “Bill is a regular and isn’t afraid to give things a go.
“We started the walking and cycling groups a few years ago to help get people outdoors more, help to keep people fit and help with social isolation. Taking part in the easy-paced group activities is a good way for people to come along, have fun and make friends.”
Bill said: “I really enjoy taking part in the activities and the added bonus is that I’ve made a lot of new friends.
“I struggle with the main faster walks so this type of activity is perfect for me; it helps to keep me fit and gives you something to get out of bed for!
“I also like the social part and being part of a group is a really good advantage of getting involved.”
