So far this year, Sky Ride Local has seen hundreds of riders of all abilities take to their bikes and explore Lancashire on two wheels. Guided by friendly British Cycling Ride Leaders along scenic local routes, the rides showcase some of the best sights the county has to offer.
Thanks to investment from British Cycling, Lancashire County Council, Blackburn with Darwen Council and Blackpool Council, the partnership has just announced a series of new rides, including routes that have never been ridden by Sky Ride Local riders before.
County Councillor John Fillis, cabinet member for highways and transport, said:
“Sky Ride Local provides a great opportunity for people in Lancashire to get out on a bike regardless of ability. These rides offer a chance to explore local areas across the county and experience the wonderful natural assets that Lancashire has on offer, whilst enjoying the fresh air and being active. We hope this programme will encourage people to cycle more and realise the health, economic and wider benefits that cycling brings.”
Cllr Phil Riley, Executive Member for Growth and Prosperity at BwDBC, said:
“In partnership with other Lancashire authorities, British Cycling and community groups we are investing in a programme of rides, events and projects to meet the increasing demand from residents and visitors for more local cycling opportunities. This is a great way of encouraging more sustainable, healthy and fun journeys across Lancashire”
Sky Ride Local has ran successfully since 2010 in Preston, South Ribble, Chorley and Blackburn, with locals and tourists alike taking part in hundreds of Sky Rides. This summer, the programme has been broadened out across the whole county and with the addition of the new rides more people than ever can enjoy getting on their bikes in Lancashire.
The new series of rides will begin on 1st September, just in time for the prestigious Tour of Britain, so there’s no better time to get cycling in Lancashire. The Tour will pass through Ribble Valley and Pendle on 7th September and what’s more, cycling fans can enjoy a selection of celebration rides in honour of the Tour.
