Have your say on walking, cycling, and wheeling (Active Travel)
Blackburn with Darwen is striving to make to make active travel the first choice for residents to undertake short journeys, and as part of longer journeys by public transport. Increased walking, cycling and wheeling will have many benefits including: improved health and wellbeing; better air quality; and reduced congestion. Declining levels of activity amongst the borough’s residents contributes to greater health inequality and puts strain on local health services.
Blackburn with Darwen is developing a more coordinated approach to walking, cycling and wheeling. Increased government funding is supporting the borough in developing a better active travel network and infrastructure, with more training and greater public consultation, events and activities. In short BwD is developing a borough wide approach to cycling and walking, that includes key stakeholders, residents and an emerging support network.
As part of this process, we would really welcome your suggestions, comments and ideas of what is going on, what needs doing, and where.
To give you a few pointers, let us know what you think of the following:
- The existing walking, cycling and wheeling routes around the Borough
- The proposed cycle routes, further details of which can be viewed here
- Your preference for Quickways (faster and direct on highway) or Quietways (more residential and less traffic)
The appeal of initiatives such as:
- Closed road cycling, wheeling events open to all
- E-bike hire schemes
- Public forums to air views and discuss with others
- Improving access to information and routes
- Regular promotional campaigns
