Reservations about cycling!
Work is quite a distance from my home!
Cycling is quicker than you think but start slowly and build up your distance, knowledge and confidence. Remember regular shorter trips are more beneficial than one long trip.
There is too much traffic!
Busy roads do seem daunting, and some junctions can require experience and confidence. Cycle training is always available, but you can plan journeys with cycling apps that avoid busy routes and use quiet ways through residential areas. You could also ride with a more experienced cycling friend or get tips and routes.
I am not good with fixing bikes!
Basic, regular checks of tyres, brakes, gears etc. to make sure your bike is safe are essential and will become routine with practice. You will be surprised how quickly you can learn and skilful you will become. Repairs are generally low cost and there are a number of good local bike shops in the borough who will be happy to fix your bike or undertake a regular service.
Our climate is not always good for cycling!
Most workplaces have somewhere you can change and store cycle clothing. There are plenty of waterproof cycling clothing options that can be easily carried and are available from local shops but take if steadier and allow a bit more time. If the rain is really heavy or icy take the day off the bike and drive – you are doing your bit!!
I don’t want to appear hot and sweaty!
As stated, most destinations will have somewhere you can change and freshen up and many will have showers. If not ask most employers are keen to encourage sustainable travel and changing facilities are more likely to be cheaper to install than paying for staff parking spaces!
I am worried about my bike being stolen!
It is always worth investing in a good quality D-lock and locking to something physical – preferably a bike stand. But always lock through the frame and where possible somewhere visible and well-lit. Again, most workplaces will provide good cycle parking, but again it might be worth asking!
